W-Beam Guardrail
JACKWIN W-beam guide rail is produced by shaping steel coils into the shape of “W” through our roll forming machine, and is galvanized to prevent corrosion and extend service life. Our W-beam highway railing can be produced with hot-dip galvanized coating, powder coating or natural corten style to meet your needs. After surface treatment, W-beam guardrail is rust-proof, corrosion-resistant, and high-strength, suitable for a wide variety of environmental conditions, and effectively prevents vehicles from driving off the guardrail. The special “W” design can also redirect vehicles to the right direction.

Highway Guardrail Posts
JACKWIN highway guardrail posts come in different types, including H posts, C posts, U posts, round pipe posts, and square posts, all of which are galvanized or powder-coated. Depending on the road surface type, our guardrail posts are further divided into bolt-down posts with plates for concrete surfaces and dig-in posts for soft soil or earth. JACKWIN guardrail posts are generally not directly connected to the beam, but rather connected via offset blocks and bolts, serving a shock-absorbing and impact-resistant function.
Highway Guardrail Components and Systems
According to guardrail-101(FHWA), JACKWIN highway guardrails consist of beams, end terminals, posts, bolts, offset block and reflectors as follows:
- Beams: include W-beams, Thrie-beams, box beams and cable barriers, serve as the main body of highway guardrail.
- End Terminals: JACKWIN provides fishtail end terminal and bullnose end terminal for options, redirecting the vehicles and preventing vehicles from spearing.
- Posts: guardrail posts have different shapes such as H post, C post, sigma posts, Z posts and round pipe posts. They can be designed to different heights to support the metal beams.
- Splice Bolts: guardrail bolts are the important parts of guardrail systems, which consists of three parts: bolt, washer, and nut.
- Offset Block: it comes in different shapes and is installed between posts and beams to connect the two. Its main purpose is to form a buffer and absorb energy when a vehicle hits the guardrail, and also to prevent vehicles from hitting the posts directly.
- Reflectors: an accessory installed on the groove to guide the driving direction. Coated with reflective sheeting, it’s highly visible even in low-light conditions.

Hot Dip Galvanizing v.s. Powder Coating

JACKWIN provides hot-dip galvanized guardrail and powder-coated guardrail for options.
Hot Dip Galvanizing
Principle: Hot-dip galvanizing is a zinc coating process in which steel materials are immersed in molten zinc at a temperature of about 450°C to form a metallurgical bond.
Advantages: It has excellent corrosion resistance, effectively protecting the internal steel even if the zinc coating is damaged. With more than 20 years of service life, it performs well even in extreme environments such as high humidity or coastal areas.
Disadvantages: Compared to powder-coated guardrails, galvanized guardrails’ appearance is grey-white, which will develop white rust on the surface (normal zinc oxidation phenomenon).
Powder Coating
Principle: Powder-coated guardrails are made by electrostatically spraying plastic powder onto the steel surface, which is then cured at high temperatures to form a protective coating.
Advantages: Powder-coated guardrails offer a wide variety of colors and can be finished with matte, frosted, or textured effects. With no solvent evaporation during production, the powder coating process is environmentally friendly.
Disadvantages: Compared to hot-dip galvanization, powder-coated guide rails offer lower corrosion resistance. Once the coating peels off or is scratched, the exposed steel will quickly rust from the damaged area, so the service life of powder-coated guardrails is 10-15 years. Powder-coated guardrails are not suitable for heavy-corrosion environments such as coastal or high-humidity areas.

The main reason is that the Million Dollar highway is located in a high-mountain region covered with heavy snow. Installing the guardrails will block snowplows or make the snow removal difficult to operate.
A highway guardrail, also known as a safety barrier, mostly made of metal steel, is designed to prevent vehicles from veering off the roads or hitting the obstacles. The special “wave shape” of W-beam or Thrie-beam can help to redirect vehicles back to the right lane.
The railing on the highway is called guardrail or crash barrier, which is installed on the edge or medians of the roads to prevent vehicles from colliding with oncoming traffic or veering off the road in the event of an accident.
The W-beam guardrail, in “W” shape or two-wave design, is the most common guardrail on a highway. Featuring high strength and low cost, it offers comparable strength to a Thrie-beam guardrail while providing a lower overall cost.
