Remove Star Pickets Guide
Removing star pickets from the ground by hand is much more difficult and can easily result in scratches and cuts.
I will introduce some easier methods to help you remove star pickets.
Method 1: Use JACKWIN Star Picket Puller
The easiest and safest way to pull posts out is using a JACKWIN star picket remover. Just place the base of our post remover on the ground and clamp the jaw around the post. Push the handle down and the puller will lift the post upward gradually.
Method 2: Use Farm Jack and Chain
If you don’t want to buy specialized tools for occasional fencing projects, you can consider using a spare farm jack at home. Wrap the chain or wire tightly around the picket and hook the chain onto your farm jack. Clamp the U-bolt above the chain to prevent slipping. Slowly press down on the handle, and you’ll find that the star picket is lifted by the chain.

Star pickets should be buried at least one-third of their total length underground for stability. Depending on soil type, fence height, fence weight, and wind conditions, you can bury the star pickets deeper for longer service time.
Star pickets are commonly used to support barbed wire fencing, barrier mesh or electric wire for agriculture, construction and landscaping.
Because its Y shaped cross-section looks like a three-pointed star, and the three rib design can provide added strength for supporting fences in Australia.
The name of star picket is commonly used for Australia and New Zealand. In America, they are called Y posts or T posts for temporary fencing or livestock fencing.
The another name of star pickets are Y posts because they have a three point Y-shaped cross-section.
- Clear the site and mark the fence lines. The spacing between fence posts is generally 2.5-4 meters. Confirm whether there are any underground pipes in the construction area.
- Use a post pounder to drive the star pickets into the ground. For hard ground, pre-wet the soil or create dig holes to make it easy to install.
- Attach wire or fence to the star pickets using post clips.
- Check the wire tension and securement.
Low-carbon steel raw materials are heated in a reheat furnace at 1100-1250℃, which is then rolled into 3-rib posts with a Y-shaped cross-section. The steel posts are cut to a fixed length and then surface-treated, including hot-dip galvanizing, bitumen coating, and powder coating. Star pickets after surface treatment are rust-proof and corrosion-resistant for long-term outdoor use.
It depends on the surface treatment. Hot-dip galvanized star pickets can last about 20-40 years and the bitumen can last 10 years.
JACKWIN offers star pickets in different weight grades. We offer light-duty star pickets (1.58 kg/m) for temporary fencing, medium-duty pickets (1.8 kg/m) for pasture livestock, and heavy-duty pickets (1.9 kg/m and 2.04 kg/m) for cattle or hard ground.
The easiest way to install the star pickets is to use a post driver. We provide manual post driver and gas powered post driver for you to choose from. Visit jackwinsafety.com for the details.
You can use a star picket remover or farm jack combined with chains to uplift the star pickets from the ground.
