What Are Aviation Obstruction Lights?
Aviation obstruction lights are optical signal devices that emit flashing warning lights. Installing them on high-rise buildings or obstacles can help pilots identify objects such as tall buildings, telecommunication towers, meteorological towers, large chimneys, wind turbines, etc., ensuring a safe and correct flight path.

Wholesale & Customize Aviation Obstruction Lights
JACKWIN offers wholesale and customization of various high-quality, competitive-priced aviation obstruction lights guaranteed for 2 years.
Intensity & Color of Aviation Obstruction Lights
- Low-intensity obstruction lights- brightness under 200 lx, which are widely used in residential areas, parking lots, crosswalks, or construction sites, installed on objects no over 45 meters distance.
- Medium intensity obstruction lights with a brightness of 200 to 1000 lx, are usually used on buildings, towers, wind turbines, and other objects with a height of 105 to 150 meters.
- High-intensity obstruction lights, with brightness exceeding 750 lx, will be used for all objects over 150 meters in height, and airports, aviation, or navigation warnings.
- Use red light at night; white light is used during both day and night and white light is used during day but red light at night.

Types of Aviation Obstruction Lights
- Building obstruction lights are mainly used to mark the profile of tall buildings. Generally speaking, low-intensity lights are installed at the middle height of the building, while multiple medium-intensity lights are installed in the middle or top of taller buildings.
- Tower obstacle lights are usually installed on various towers, such as telecommunication signal towers, chemical plant chimneys, high-voltage power line towers, etc. Aircraft can easily hit towers when flying at low altitudes, so obstacle lights are used for warning and identification. In addition, the design of the lights is waterproof, rust-proof, durable and reliable, which can reduce maintenance and save costs.
- Airport obstruction lights are used as marking and warning, and are used at airports or aprons to provide sufficient lighting sight and marking for airport ground staff and pilots to protect the safety of passengers, pilots and crew members.
- Aircraft obstruction lights – Aircraft obstacle warning lights are usually installed on a series of buildings over 60 meters high, such as high towers, industrial chimneys, windmills, water tanks, cranes, broadcast masts, and must be required to work normally and have high visibility during the day and night to prevent aircraft from touching the buildings.
- Telecom obstruction lights – Telecommunications obstruction lights are widely used to increase the visibility of fixed obstacles to avoid conflicts with safe aircraft navigation.
Options of Power Supply
JACKWIN offers an optional power supply for your choice, you can choose any one of below:
- Solar-powered panel and battery supply – Wireless, convenient, low cost for long-term use and low maintenance.
- Direct power transmission is more stable with AC or DC power supply.
- AC power supply – For 110V, 220V, 240V.
- DC power supply – For 12V, 24V, 36V, 48V.
- Uninterruptible power supply – Provide backup power for the obstruction lights in the event of a power outage, allowing them to continue to operate stably and avoid major risks between aircraft and high-rise buildings.

More About Aviation Obstruction Lights
Below we will introduce some regulatory requirements for obstruction lights, hoping that you will have a better understanding of the product before purchasing.

Aviation obstruction lights are high-brightness LED lights that, according to the International Aviation Organization, must meet the following specific requirements and standards to improve aircraft safety and ensure that aircraft pilots can see obstacles at night or in bad weather.
Quantity of Lights
The number of lights depends on the diameter of the top structure:
- 20 feet or less: three lights per floor
- 20–100 feet: four lights per floor
- 100–200 feet: six lights per floor
- 200 feet or more: eight lights per floor
In addition, obstruction lights also have requirements in terms of color, brightness, installation height, spacing, control, etc.
- The color can only be white or red.
- The brightness cannot be too bright to avoid dazzling the pilot, but it must be visible at least one nautical mile away.
- The installation height of the light must be above the average high water level.
- The spacing is determined by the diameter of the obstacle.
- It must be controllable. For example, photocell sensing.

Obstruction lights are used to warn pilots that there are obstacles around the aircraft and that preventive operations are needed in advance. There are two standards for obstacle lights, which vary according to different national standards-International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
ICAO Standards Requirements:
- High-intensity Type A: Flashing white light with a brightness of 200,000 cd during the day, 20,000 cd at dusk, and 2,000 cd at night
- High-intensity Type B: Flashing white light with a brightness of 100,000 cd during the day, 20,000 cd at dusk, and 2,000 cd at night
FAA Standards Requirements:
- Advisory Circular AC 150/5345-43J: Specifies environmental and design requirements for obstruction lighting equipment
- Advisory Circular AC No. 70/7460-1: Provides information on obstruction marking and lighting
- Advisory Circular AC No. 150/5345-53: Provides specifications for obstruction lighting equipment
Obstruction lights can be used on a variety of structures, including wind turbines, bridges, chimneys, and buildings. The type of light used depends on the height of the structure.

FAA regulation lights include aircraft lights, position lights, anti-collision lights, light towers and greeners, airport lighting, runway centerline lighting, and obstruction lights.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), any object that reaches a height of 200 feet (AGL) must be marked with a light tower and then marked with an obstruction light. For safety reasons, it is also necessary to monitor airport obstruction lights.

Aviation obstruction lights are divided into illumination lights and warning lights. It is a system, which is a kind of LED light installed on the obstacle. When the aircraft is flying at low altitude, the pilot on the aircraft can clearly see the strong light on the obstacle, which enhances the safety of the aircraft and obstacles and makes operations in advance to avoid obstacles. It is also used for aircraft flight navigation and positioning.
