Fence Post Installation

Received your fence posts but don’t know how to install them? Don’t worry, follow our fence posts installation steps and let’s take a look:

1.Wooden fence posts: Wooden fence posts are commonly used for privacy fences, roadway fencing, and ranch fencing. Dig a hole in the designated area to a depth of one-third of the total length, using a digger or other machinery if necessary. Then, lay gravel at the bottom for drainage. Finally, secure the treated wooden post with concrete and wait 48 hours for it to dry.

2.Steel fence posts: steel fence posts, including T posts, Y posts and U posts, are commonly used for wire mesh or livestock. To install steel fence posts, the post driver can be effective and labour-saving. Drive the steel posts into ground directly until the anchor plate is fully buried.

3.Plastic fence posts: vinyl fence posts and PVC fence posts are the most common plastic fence posts, used for decorative or residential fencing. Mark the fence line and dig post holes(at least ⅓ depth of the post length). Insert the fence posts into the holes, then fill and secure them with concrete, and finally install the rails and fence pickets.

Advantages

Steel Fence Posts v.s. Wooden Fence Posts

Steel Fence Posts
Wooden Fence Posts

Steel Fence PostsCompared to wooden fence posts, steel fence posts are durable and sturdy, offering a longer service life (20-30 years). JACKWIN steel posts can be easily driven into the ground using a post driver. Galvanized steel posts and powder-coated steel posts are rust-proof and corrosion-resistant in humid or salty environments.  However, steel posts require a larger initial investment and are more expensive compared to wooden fence posts.

Wooden Fence Posts: Wooden fence posts have a natural and rustic appearance, making them ideal for gardens, residential areas, and scenic spots. Wooden posts require less initial investment and are readily available in areas with abundant forest resources. However, these fence posts are susceptible to rot and insect damage, requiring regular maintenance, and have a lifespan of approximately 5-10 years.

Our Production Capacity

JACKWIN fence posts are made of different materials, including steel, plastic, fiberglass and composite material. Steel fence posts are produced by roll forming, welding and galvanizing, and plastic fence posts are produced by extrusion. Our factory is equipped with more than ten machines for producing various types of fence posts, so you’re sure to find the right one here.

Our Roll Forming Process

Uncoiled steel strips are processed through a series of roll forming processes to produce Y/U/T/square/round shaped posts.

Electric Resistance Welded

High-frequency resistance welding is used to eliminate the unclosed seams in the round tube and create a continuous, smooth surface.

Extrusion

Plastic fence posts are manufactured through extrusion. The melted plastic granules are forced into shape die and form square, round and T shape.

Hot-dip Galvanizing

Steel is immersed in 450℃ molten zinc, forming a layer of iron-zinc alloy on the steel surface, which effectively prevents rust and corrosion.

How much concrete per fence post?

It depends on the pole size and hole diameter of concrete posts. 4X4 in fence post with holes in diameter of 250-300mm commonly requires 1 bag of concrete weighing approximately 40-50 lb. For 6X6in concrete posts, you need 2-3 bags (40-50 lb each) for added stability.

How deep should a fence post be?

For better stability, fence posts are typically buried to a depth of ⅓ to ½ of their total length. The deeper the posts are buried, the more stable the fence will be, protecting it from strong winds and the weight of the fence itself.

How far apart should fence posts be?

It depends on your fence type. For privacy fences, a post spacing of 6-8 feet works better with the length of wooden fence panels and effectively prevents the fence from sagging. For agricultural fences such as those using T-posts or Y-posts, the post spacing is typically 8-12 feet.

How to install fence posts?

Step 1: Mark the fence line. Determine and mark the area where you want to install the fence, and check for any underground pipes or electrical wires in that area.

Step 2: Dig post holes. Use a digger to pre-dig the holes before you install the larger fence posts. For T-posts or Y-posts, you can use a post pounder to drive them into the ground directly.

Step 3: Add gravel at the bottom to improve drainage and prevent posts from rotting.

Step 4: Place the posts into the holes and backfill with soil. Use a spirit level to check if the fence posts are level.

How to remove fence post?

For driven post(T post, Y post, U post), you can use JACKWIN post puller or a farm jack to lift the posts straight up. For concrete post, wooden post or vinyl post, you can dig around the post and pull the post out.

How to fix a fence post that is leaning?

The leaning fence post can be temporarily secured with rope or stakes. Another permanent repair solution is to pour concrete around the base of the post. If the base of the post is rotten, it’s necessary to replace it for long-term stability.

Can I set a fence post with just dirt?

Yes you can. You need to dig a deep hole and thoroughly tamp down backfilled dirt to prevent leaning. However, soil does not provide as good a fixing effect as cement, so it’s best to use soil with a high clay content whenever possible.

Is gravel necessary under a fence post?

For wooden fence posts, gravel is highly recommended to improve the drainage and prevent rot so as to extend the life service time of wooden posts. For concrete posts or steel posts, gravel under a fence post is not necessary.

Why do people put caps on fence posts?

Caps on the top of wooden fence posts can prevent the tops of the posts from rotting or cracking due to water accumulation, extending their lifespan. For T-posts or Y-posts, caps on the posts can protect people from the sharp edges at the top.

Who manufactures fence posts?

JACKWIN manufactures various kinds of fence posts, including T posts, Y posts, star pickets, chain link fence posts and electric fence posts. Our factory covers an area of 3000 square meters and is capable of producing various fencing system-related products.
