JACKWIN Portable Skid Resistance Tester
JACKWIN pendulum skid tester is designed to measure the frictional resistance between the rubber slider on the head of the pendulum arm and the tested surfaces. When released, the pendulum arm pushes the pointer to the highest reading (between 0-150 scale), so the pointer position gives the PTV(Pendulum Test Value). The higher the number, the lower the potential to slip. Before that, using the built-in spirit level as a reference, adjust the knobs on the base to level the instrument.

The test use an instrument called pendulum skid resistance tester to measure the friction between rubber slider on the head of the pendulum arm and the tested surfaces, which is also known as coefficient friction.
The pendulum test use rubber sliders to simulate the foot on the road surfaces. When released, the pendulum swings down to contact the testing surface and the pointer is pushed by the pendulum arm. Read the pointed scale and get PTV scores.
Raise the pendulum arm to the release position and ensure it’s locked by the release catch. Press the button and release the pendulum arm. Catch the arm before it swings back to the road surfaces. Read the data indicated by the pointer.

A Short Guide for Pendulum Skid Resistance Tester
JACKWIN portable skid resistance tester is developed to provide a method of accessing the resistance of wet road surface to skidding for highway engineers, and I will give a brief introduction below:
- Screw the three leveling knobs on the base-frame to level the instrument until the bubble on the center of spirit level.
- Adjust the height of the pendulum arm and ensure the arm can swing freely without touching the testing road surface.
- Raise the arm to the release catch and position the pointer so that it aligns with the pendulum arm.
- Release the pendulum arm to allow it to swing the pointer to the 0 mark, and catch the swinging pendulum arm after its maximum forward swing.(If not 0 mark, fine-tune the pointer by adjusting the friction discs.)
- Use a brush to clean the testing surfaces.
- Use a sliding gauge to check the sliding path length(usually 126-127mm).
- Raise the pendulum arm and wet the testing surface.
- Release the pendulum arm which carries the pointer and catch the arm. Repeat the swings for 5 times and record the data of each test. The difference between the maximum and minimum values among the 5 values must not exceed 3. If it exceeds 3, repeat the operation until it meets the specification.
