How do JACKWIN retroreflectometers work?
The basic principle of a retroreflectometer is to detect how much light is reflected from road signs and road markings to its light source, usually the light from headlights.
- The device is placed flat on the tested surface or perpendicular to it.
- A retroreflectometer sends a beam of light to the tested road markings or traffic signs at a fixed angle.
- Our device captures and measures the amount of light reflected back from the signs or road markings.
- JACKWIN retroreflectometer calculates the retroreflectivity value automatically, usually expressed in mcd/m²/lx (millicandelas per square meter per lux) or cd/lx/m² (candela per lux per square meter).

Road Sign Retroreflectometer v.s. Road Marking Retroreflectometer


Road Sign Retroreflectometer: aim to measure the visibility of reflective traffic signs at night, usually operated in dry conditions. Our sign retroreflectometer obeys the 30-meter geometry rules: 0.2° observation angle and 5.0° entrance angle, and the results are usually expressed in cd/lx/m². Road Marking Retroreflectometer: used to measure the performance of road markings with reflective glass beads at night, and can measure in dry, wet or wet-recovery conditions. JACKWIN retroreflectometer for road markings simulates car headlights illuminating the road from a distance of approximately 30 meters, that is measure it at 1.05° observation angle and 88.76° entrance angle.
