A street light is a lamp that you can install along roads and public areas to provide illumination at night. They are used to improve visibility and security.
In this article, we will talk about the street light manufacturing method. You will understand basic components of street lights and the materials you need to make them.
Materials Used in Street Lights
To manufacture a street light, you need a mix of electrical parts and strong body materials.
Aluminum Housing: You can use aluminum to make the outer body. It is light but very strong.
LED Chips: You have to use LED chips to produce light. They save energy and give bright light.
Glass or Lens Cover: Glass or plastic lens is required to cover the light and protect the inside parts.
Wiring and Drivers: Wires are used to run the light and the driver controls the power of light.
Heat Sink: You need a heat sink to control heat. It takes heat away from the LED chips and keeps the light cool.
Screws and Fasteners: You have to use screws, bolts & nuts to fix all parts together.

How To Make a Street Light?
Below is the step-by-step street light manufacturing process, which you can follow to manufacture street lights.
1. LED Welding
The first step is to attach the LED to the circuit board, which is called PCB (LED PCB). You need to place each LED in the right position and also check its direction.
Now, you have to heat the soldering tool to the correct temperature and carefully apply solder to attach the LEDs. It’s also important to inspect all connections to make sure they are strong and safe.
2. Grease Coating
After you weld the LEDs, you should apply a grease coating on the LEDs and other sensitive parts. It is a thermal paste that blocks water/dust and keeps LEDS cool.
This way, the grease also keeps street lights last longer and work safely in all weather. You have to spread the paste evenly so every part is fully covered.
3. Fix PCB (Seat Board in Housing)
Now, you can place the PCB (circuit board with LEDs) into the street light housing or aluminum body. You should carefully fit it in the seat or holder, so it stays stable.
You can secure it with screws or clips. This step keeps the board safe and makes sure the LEDs stay in the right position for proper lighting.
4. Weld the Wires
Next, you should connect all the wires and weld them securely. For example: join LED wires to board, driver leads with PCB & power supply plus all other cables which carry electricity inside the light.
You have to connect all these electronic parts with the use of solder. So that electricity can flow safely and the light works properly.
5. Pre Power Test
Once you have attached the wires, you have to perform an initial power check. First of all, you should turn on the light for at least 5 minutes to check that all LEDs work.
With this step, you can spot any dead or faulty LEDs early. If you find any non-functional LED, you have to fix it before you move to the next step.
6. Secure Driver
To secure the driver inside the street light housing, you can place it in the correct position and fix it with screws or clips. The driver controls the power flow to the LEDs. A well-secured driver keeps the light operation safe and prevents damage from movement or vibration.
7. Install Lens
The lens used in a street light is generally made of strong plastic (PC or PMMA) or tempered glass. You can install the lens on the street light to cover the LEDs. To set the beam angle of the lens, move or tilt the lens slightly until the light covers the area you want.
Then you need to check the optical alignment. For example, you can switch on the light and see where the beams go. Always make sure the light points straight and does not shine too high or too low.
8. Aging
You can perform aging on the street light to check its working. For this, you need to turn on the light for around 24 hours as a stress test. This is helpful to see how it works under continuous use.
During this time, you should record any drop in brightness (flux drop). As a result, you can find weak LEDs, driver issues, or wiring problems before installation of street lights.
9. Impact Test
An impact test is performed to confirm the strength of the street light. You also test for electrical surges up to 2 kV to make sure the light can handle sudden voltage spikes.
In this test, you need to make sure the light does not reset or fail. Moreover, you should examine the power light to handle hits or vibration during transport and bad weather.
10. Final Inspection
Now it’s time to turn on the street light for a full run to make sure all parts work perfectly. Then, the quality control (QC) team approves the light if it passes every check.
Due to this final inspection, you can make sure the street light is ready, safe, functional and high quality before it is installed on the road.
Street Light Parameters
Street light parameters are the measurements and features of a street light. They show you the brightness level of light, the energy it uses, its lifespan and the way it spreads light on the road.
| Street Light Features | Meaning/Purpose | Recommended Range for Roads |
| Beam Angle | The total area which street light covers | 60° to 150° |
| Input Voltage | Electricity supplies the light needed | 100-277 V AC |
| Luminous Efficacy | Brightness per unit of power | 160 lumens per watt or more |
| Wattage | It is the energy used by the lamp | 60 to 150 W |
| Color Temperature | Shade of the light (warm or cool) | 3000 K (warm) to 5000 K (cool) |
| CRI (Color Rendering Index) | Natural colors that look under the light | 70 or higher |
How Technology Used in Street Lights?
Smart street lights are safe and more energy efficient. Because when you use technology in street lights, they can turn on automatically at night, adjust brightness, detect faults and connect to a central control system.
- Sensors: You can install motion or light sensors. They turn the light on in the dark or when someone passes by. This saves electricity and functions only when needed.
- IOT: Street lights can also connect to the internet. That means, you can control them remotely, monitor performance as well as adjust brightness from a central system.
- Data Collection: Smart street lights are able to collect information about energy use and traffic patterns. You can also detect any faults in light due to this advanced system.
- Solar Power: Some street lights use solar panels to generate electricity from the sun. This way, it’s easy for you to install them in remote or off grid locations.
Role of Quality Control in Street Light Manufacturing
Quality control (QC) is one of the important steps in the production of street lights. For example: you can use QC to check every part and process to make sure the light is safe & strong.
You can also find faulty LEDs, weak wiring, damaged or loose parts before the light is installed. Quality control is also important to make sure the street light saves energy and provides reliable lighting on roads and streets.

Answers To Your Important Questions
Why Yellow Lights Are Used in Street Lights?
Yellow street lights are mostly high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps. These lights are used because they save energy and cost less. Their yellow light works better in fog and creates less glare, so you can see the road more clearly at night.
Which Lamps Are Used in Street Lighting?
Modern street lights generally use LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology. Because it uses less energy and gives better light. Some older lights are still used, such as HPS and metal halide, for bright white light.
What Mirror is Used in Street Light?
Convex mirrors are used in street lights to spread light over a wide area. Instead of focusing light in one direction, they distribute it evenly. In such a way, it improves visibility and covers more space.
When Was the Street Light Invented?
Public street lighting started in the 15th century. In 1417, London asked people to hang lanterns to reduce crime. In 1667, Paris used oil lamps on the streets. Later, electric lights replaced gas lights in 1878. This change led to today’s modern LED street lights.
What Material is Used For Street Light Poles?
Street light pole materials include steel, aluminum, fiberglass, wood, or concrete. Steel is strong and handles heavy loads and strong winds. Aluminum is light and resists rust, and fiberglass does not conduct electricity.
