What is a Traffic Signal Controller?

JACKWIN traffic signal controllers consist of a controller, conflict monitor, back panel, load switches, flasher, circuit breakers, power filters, and manual control and test switches.

Our controller is the core of the traffic control system and primarily coordinates traffic signals at intersections.

How do traffic signal controllers work?

  • When external vehicle detectors—such as induction loops, cameras, or radar and infrared detectors—detect vehicle traffic, speed, and distance, they can transmit the signals to the controllers in real time.
  • After receiving data, the microprocessor performs calculations based on a preset algorithm to adjust the cycle, green-to-white ratio, and phase difference.
  • Our controller outputs control signals based on the calculation results to perform timing control, sensor-based control, and adaptive coordination control.

Why Choose JACKWIN Traffic Signal Controller?

Why Choose JACKWIN Traffic Signal Controller?

JACKWIN traffic signal controllers have the following advantages:

Proactive Prediction: To minimize losses from delayed responses, our controllers not only dynamically adjust to real-time traffic conditions but also predict traffic trends over the next few minutes.

Minimalist Delivery: Our controllers support the F5G all-optical intersection solution, simplifying the traditionally complex cabling setup to require only a single optical fiber and a single cable. Our construction timeline can be shortened to as little as one day, and we do not cause extensive damage to the road surface.

Industrial Redundancy Design: Our hardware features functional redundancy, and the core control module is capable of self-monitoring and self-diagnosis. Even if a single-direction cable or fiber optic cable is damaged, service will not be interrupted.

How to Choose a Traffic Signal Controller for a Busy City Street?

JACKWIN traffic signal controllers should be selected based on traffic volume, system reliability, communication capabilities, and future scalability.

  • Output capacity is determined by the size of the intersection and is available in 22-channel, 44-channel, and 56-channel configurations.
  • You should select a traffic signal controller with strong future expandability based on your specific application. So you can add signal phases, detection devices, or intelligent traffic functions at a later date.
  • If you prioritize deployment costs and system flexibility, you can choose the SCATS adaptive system; if you’re looking for traffic efficiency and precise control, we recommend the SCOOT model-driven system.
  • The EVP mode is a preemptive control system with a high priority level. The TSP, however, is subject to certain conditions; adjustments to traffic signal timing must not place an excessive burden on overall traffic flow.

Our Manufacturing Process

JACKWIN is a specialized factory covering an area of more than 4,000 square meters and equipped with a complete production line. We utilize processes such as automated welding, coating application and curing, die casting, and mold forming to optimize the international export process for traffic signal controllers.

Automated Welding of Traffic Signal Controller
Automated Welding

JACKWIN uses automated placement machines and wave soldering processes to ensure that solder joints on circuit boards remain secure even in environments with prolonged vibration.

Coating Application and Curing of Traffic Signal Controller
Coating Application and Curing

We use electrostatic powder coating machines and automatic spray guns to apply the powder to the surface of the workpieces. It is then cured through high-temperature baking, forming a hard, dense, corrosion-resistant coating on the surface.

Die Casting and Mold Molding

We use die-casting machines to inject molten metal into molds, producing high-precision metal parts. After rapid cooling and solidification, the final product is a metal casing with excellent heat dissipation and protective properties.

High-Temperature Aging Test of Traffic Signal Controller

We use specialized constant-temperature and constant-humidity test chambers to measure the surface temperatures of key components under continuous high-temperature aging conditions. If the controllers freeze, restart, or exhibit abnormal behavior, they are rejected.

Why does a JACKWIN traffic signal cabinet have a malfunction management unit (MMU)?

JACKWIN MMU is a required option that complies with the NEMA TS-2 and EN 12675 standards. Our traffic signal cabinet controllers ensure absolute traffic safety and prevent signal failures through the MMU.

  • Preventing Dangerous Signal Conflicts
  • Detects bulb failures, short circuits, open circuits, and power fluctuations.
  • When a fault is detected, the MMU automatically switches the intersection to a safe fallback mode.
What happens if a traffic controller cabinet loses power?

JACKWIN traffic signal controllers are equipped with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and a backup battery system. In the event of a power outage, our controllers switch to backup power within milliseconds, providing 4–7 hours of runtime. If the power outage exceeds the backup runtime, the system automatically saves data and shuts down. It then switches to safe mode and sends an alert to the central processor.

Can traffic signal cabinets be monitored remotely?

Yes, our traffic signal cabinets can remotely monitor signal status, cabinet environmental conditions, physical security, and power metrics. Engineers can remotely adjust signal timing schemes, switch control modes, or set holiday schedules.

How are traffic cabinets protected from lightning?

JACKWIN traffic signal controller cabinets intercept current through external lightning rods and grounding systems, while internal surge protectors suppress surge voltages in the power grid. In addition, we electrically connect the metal components so that all parts reach the same potential simultaneously in the event of a lightning strike, thereby preventing dangerous sparks or arcs caused by potential differences.

How often should traffic cabinets be maintained?

You need to inspect the appearance and basic functions every 15–30 days. And you need to perform internal cleaning, tighten terminal connections, check for corrosion and rust, and conduct functional tests on a quarterly basis.

How do detector loops communicate with the controller cabinet?

When a vehicle passes over the loop, the inductance of the coil changes. The vehicle detector converts this into a voltage signal that is sent to the traffic signal controller’s input interface.

Should I choose an ATC cabinet or a NEMA TS2 cabinet?

If you only need basic timing control or simple vehicle detection control, and do not require complex AI algorithms or vehicle-to-infrastructure coordination features, you can choose the NEMA TS2 cabinets.

If you need support for ITS applications, more efficient remote monitoring, fault diagnosis, and OTA updates, you can choose ATC cabinets.

Can older traffic controllers work in new cabinets?

Yes, our traffic signal controllers comply with NEMA and ATC standards and are mechanically and electrically compatible.

Why is my traffic signal cabinet overheating?

Excessive external heat load: Direct sunlight or installation next to an asphalt road or on a concrete foundation.

High heat generation from internal components or a malfunctioning cooling system, combined with a tight seal, results in inadequate ventilation.
