What is the Super Bowl?

Super bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL) in the United States. Since 1966, it has been the final game of every NFL season. This is played once a year between the champions of the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). It decides which team is the best for that season.

This sport is famous for big halftime shows and creative commercials. The NFL owns the official name “Super Bowl”. Hence, many companies are not allowed to use it in their ads. Moreover, the day the Super Bowl is played is popularly called Super Bowl Sunday or Super Sunday.

Why do they call it the super bowl? The name super bowl was given by Lamar Hunt (owner of the Kansas City Chiefs) in the mid 1960s. He got the idea from his children’s toy called a “Super Ball.” Basically, Hunt first suggested it as a temporary name for the AFL-NFL championship. Later, it gained popularity and was officially adopted by the NFL in 1969.

How Often is Super Bowl?

Is the Super Bowl every year? Super bowl sport is played once every year. It marks the end of the NFL season. This yearly format keeps the competition fair and organized. Further, it gives teams enough time to prepare and improve their game before the next season.

History of Super Bowl

Origins of the Super Bowl: In the 1960s, the football craze was increasing fast. A 27-year-old Dallas businessman (Lamar Hunt) wanted to own an NFL team. So, he applied for a franchise so many times. But the NFL league kept saying no to him. He didn’t give up and joined other rejected businessmen called Foolish Club. Together, they started a brand new league, which is the American Football League (AFL).

AFL-NFL Rivalry: In the AFL league, the football was played in a faster and more exciting way. This association competed with the NFL. Because of that rivalry, football became more popular among fans and television networks than baseball in the US (in the end of 1960). In 1966, the NFL realized it had real and tough competition with the AFL.

Merger of AFL & NFL: After years of competition, the owners of AFL Lamar Hunt and NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle agreed to merge both leagues in 1966. They decided on a future date of 1970 for the full merger. Until then, the NFL and AFL champions would face each other at the end of each season called the annual championship game.

Who named the Super Bowl? In the summer of 1966, Lamar Hunt and other football leaders met to discuss league matters. During this meeting, the owner of the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs suggested the name “Super Bowl” for the upcoming game, inspired by his kid’s toy. Although he and Rozelle thought that a different name might work better. At first, the league used the formal name, which was the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. But later, the media and fans adopted “Super Bowl”.

First Super Bowl (1967): What year did the Super Bowl start? Super Bowl I was not as big or exciting as today’s Super Bowls. The first game was held at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1967 between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs. The tickets averaged $6 to $12, and not all tickets were sold. But the game still attracted 65 million TV viewers. It was the biggest audience for an American sports event at that time.

The Packers won the game with a score of 35 to 10. They easily beat the Chiefs, which shows the NFL was stronger. Their coach (Vince Lombardi) lifted the first-ever championship trophy. Later, the trophy was named after him and became known as the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Rise in Super Bowl Popularity: In season three, Super Bowl name was official. In that same year, the New York Jets (AFL) beat the Baltimore Colts of the NFL’s. This win shocked the world and proved the AFL can compete with big teams. This gives the AFL respect and credibility. From there, the game grew into a massive cultural event.

After the AFL-NFL merger, the league split into two conferences such as NFC (National Football Conference) & AFC (American Football Conference). The winners of each played in super bowl. The two week break between the conference games created more excitement & suspense. In 1974, the Super Bowl had become so big and popular that a famous writer (Norman Vincent Peale) said even Jesus would want to be there.

Commercials and Cultural Impact: Over the years,  super bowl became more than a football game. It’s now about exciting moments, drama, culture and entertainment. In 1980s, the NFC teams beat the AFC teams badly in Super Bowl. Hence, advertisers saw this as a chance to show their best commercials to millions of viewers.

In 1984, Apple made a famous ad for the Macintosh during the Super Bowl XVIII. The ad was a huge hit. This is because companies started spending millions for a 30 seconds commercial for the super bowl. In the halftime shows of this sport, huge stars like Michael Jackson perform live. This way, the commercials also became part of the fun of the game.

Consistent Viewership and National Attention: Today, the Superbowl is an American holiday. Over 100 million people watch every year. In fact, cities compete to host it and tickets can cost thousands. The halftime shows of super bowl dominate social media.

The NFL’s system allows small teams to stay competitive and become popular nationwide. For example, a Super Bowl between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks attracted a record 112 million viewers in the United States of America.

Why Does the Super Bowl Use Roman Numerals?

Roman numerals were first used for the Super Bowl in 1971 with Super Bowl V. The idea of Roman numerals also belonged to the founder of the Kansas City Chiefs Lamar Hunt. He thought the use of these numbers would make the Super Bowl feel more grand. Hunt also considers it as a way to make the NFL’s biggest game extra unique.

The football season starts in one year and ends in the next year (for example: 2025-2026). So, Roman numerals are used to name each Super Bowl to avoid confusion about the year.

The first four games were renamed Super Bowls I, II, III and IV. Originally, the first two games were called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. After that, the Super Bowl has used Roman numerals every year with one exception.

The reality is, the 50th Super Bowl (held in 2016) did not use roman numerals. Instead of Super Bowl L, the National Football League wrote it as Super Bowl 50. The reason was that the letter L didn’t look good in ads and marketing. Further, the numeral “L” could be confused with a loss in football. After that season, the league returned to Roman numerals, which started with Super Bowl LI the following year.

Each Super Bowl has a special field design to make the game unique. For example: the end zones/sidelines and midfield logo. These markings are painted according to team colors as well as host city designs.

With this pattern, you can make the field stand out and look attractive on TV to create a memorable experience for fans & players. Sometimes, NFL’s field crew along with professional turf design teams add special artwork or sponsor logos to celebrate the event.

How Logos & Lines are Painted on the Super Bowl Field?

Super Bowl field painting is a careful process. It starts around two weeks before the actual game and involves expert crews plus approx. 600 gallons of paint.

  • First of all, you need to clear and level the grass or turf. You have to remove the old paint/markings with the help of a marking removal machine.
  • Then you can use measuring tools and strings to mark exact positions for yard lines, numbers, logos or other designs.
  • It’s important to apply a white base layer before paint (mostly starting on Friday), so colors look bright and clear.
  • To paint straight lines (like yard lines and sidelines), you should use a field marking machine or marking robots. With this tool, you can create clean lines with maximum accuracy. Ideally, you should perform paint work on the next day (Saturday) after base coat application.
  • For Large Super Bowl logos or team names, you should place large stencils on the field and then fill them with high quality marking paint. This way, you can keep the design accurate.
  • You can also use spray paint or rollers to fill in the stencil with colors. Plus, you need to add multiple paint layers to make the design bold and long lasting.
  • Now, you should let the paint dry completely and check for mistakes too. You can fix small errors with touch-ups.
  • After that, the NFL team will inspect the field to make sure everything looks perfect for the game.
